Interview with Samuel and Flavio:

Hello, can you tell us about your background?

Good afternoon. Having always been attracted by images, I liked both video and photography. After a year of cinema in college, I decided to devote myself to photography through a photography course.

(Flavio) Hello. I’ve always been attracted to art, even before photography. This led me to do a year in art history at the University of Aix en Provence. Subsequently I wanted to do a school that would allow me to find what I like the most, and I am very satisfied with the choice made with photography. I’m in a BTS Photography, and I’m getting my degree at the end of the year.

What brought you to work together?

I met Flavio in Lille a year ago. After living together more than a month we became very close and naturally continued our relationship during work. We have done both videos and photo shoots together.

(Flavio) Being in the same training, we met at school. Samuel hosted me some time, and due to this proximity we began to do projects together. We assisted each other and this continues today.

What do you show us in your photographic work? What is your favorite style?

Since 2009, fashion photography became my chosen field. I had the chance to go behind the scenes of fashion, following a designer through the stages of creation, and to assist fashion photographers as well. Most of all I like to work with light, set design and characters in order to produce an ambiance.

Can you explain what the photo Tribute to McQueen means.

Tribute to McQueen was taken in New York in summer 2011, when the great Lee Alexander McQueen retrospective at MoMA was organized. McQueen an outstanding designer, who managed to raise his creations to the status of art pieces. His world of beauty and cruelty fascinates me.

What is the link between all the photos presented.

The exhibition presents images of beauty and destruction. The relationship between the city and nature and between beauty and death are relationships that intrigue me and that I try to put in my pictures.

Flavio, what is your style?

(Flavio) My work is in two parts, distinct and close at the same time. On the one hand I enjoy photographing people’s lives, show that what we call “ordinary” is much more interesting than what people think. The other part is a series of projects where I want to mix the extraordinary, the monumental and repetition in everyday scenes, which becomes a complete mise-en-scène. Tim Walker is a very good example for me.
